Johnson / Evinrude Any real difference

I have 1976 70 Horse Evinrude..I have a line on a 1977 70 Horse Johnson...Am I correct in thinking that they are pretty much the same except for the color scheme.

i believe 1976 is hydro-mechanical shift, 1977 is mechanical shift. power heads are basically the same, but lower unit and shift linkage are different, in the years. 77 was the change year. 73-76 were hydro mechanical shift.
