I have a situation and need help, I have bought this kit that had no instructions in installing it. Have no idea how to install this kit 18-2679 for the lower gear housing seal kit for a Johnson/Evinrude 1954 7.5 motor I have searched the web for days and cannot find anything, on this. I need either a schematic or some visual instruction for this installation.

Well thank you for your response but this will not help as my motor is a 1954 with a 7.5 hp

owner's manual for the '54 Fleetwin at the boatinfo site, but parts blow up probably not enough for what you need. Clymer or Intertec used to publish an Old Outboard manual for under 30 hp (1 vol) and another for over 30. That publication has parts diagrams, although again may start with '55. Worth trying to locate it. I'm pretty sure much of the info was copied from OMC publications.

Here's a video of a similar motor. Yours is almost the same except a bit smaller.

you need to pull the power head to undo the shift rod from the shift handle.once you do that it is all gravy if you have installed a seal before.

Yea, I forgot about that step. Not as bad as it sounds, just pay attention to the order in which things come apart as you take them off. May as well install a new water pump impeller while you have it apart.

Something else to note. There is a carbon seal assembly at the top of the drive shaft. ENSURE all of these components are in very good condition before re installing the gearcase and powerhead. They prevent water from getting into powerhead, and should not be overlooked. Usually if carbon seal is not cracked, you just need to replace the o ring inside it. If gasket on top of the SS washer is damaged or stretched, replace it as well. You will also likely need a new base gasket, as they get torn apart pulling the powerhead off.

Very good idea to change impeller as stated, while all of this is apart.
