Just got home from a day at the lake and noticed when I was putting my boat on the trailer that the tilt/trim sounded funny and that it was bouncing on the way down just before it reaches the slow speed. The unit worked great before I left home today and the trim worked great all day. I have owned this boat a little over two months now and the trim motor was replaced shortly before I purchased the boat. The trim still works it just sounds as though it is not up to speed and smooth as it was earlier in the day and it now has the bounce.

I had a pretty hard hit in the middle of some waves on this outing where the boat almost completely came out of the water, could this be what damaged it?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Tilt motor all the way up and lock it there, open , fill, close. Unlock, lower motor all the way down. Now back up, lock, fill, close, lower. Repeat, repeat, repeat..

Use Dextrin II auto trans fluid, or power steering fluid.

Re: Johnson ast Strike 150 Tilt/Trim Bouncing

Tash,
Which am I trying to accomplish in this process? Am I trying to bleed the system of air or am I trying to "change the fluid"?

When I initially opened the cap there was not any fluid that came out but I could only place maybe an ounce of fluid before it ran out and it was black as coal.

After performng the process that you described above about 6-7 times the unit became extremely smooth and worked as good if not even better than it did before this isue occured and after 12-14 cycles it began to bounce all over again.

I am assuming that I am trying to change out or clean up the fluid that is in the unit and I need to keep repeating the process as described until I get clean Fluid??

I appreciate the help very very much and I am glad that it appears that I am not going to have to spend a fortune fixing the problem.

Thanks,
David

Re: Johnson ast Strike 150 Tilt/Trim Bouncing

Tasasdaddy is on the money. Had the same issue with my 93' 200. I have no idea what the issue is but when mine got the "bouncies" I thought the transom was going to give out. I greased the pivot pin, retorqued and backed off 1/4 turn the pivot bolt nut and still I had issues.

Went through the process of up and down, wait 10 minutes refill with ATF to the point of spilling over bunches of times. Problem solved. I have to think there is crappy hydraulic fluid full of air biubbles in there and by doing this we are replacing some of it. And yes it was making strange sounds on the tilt cycle.

Good luck

Gotta love this site!
