Johnson and Evinrude Electric Shift, what years are the same?

I've got a 1970 Johnson 40hp electric shift that I've been collecting donor motors for.

I found a 1972 Evinrude 40hp electric shift that I can pick up fairly cheap with controls and whatnot.

Will the 72 have the same pieces the 70 has?

Depends on the model numbers. Go to www.marineengine.com and look up both outboards and compare the components. I would look at the lower units (gear case) and power heads.

The 1972 model number isn't listed on marineengine. I emailed the fellow that has it and asked him to double check the number he gave me, but looking at the pics he sent, they look identical, except for the cowling. He took detailed pictures of the lower unit and housing and they are identical. I'm waiting on pictures of 'under the cowling' components to see how close they match up.

Hopefully he just wrote down the wrong number and has a different number this afternoon I can compare to my 1970.

From what I can tell the parts should be interchangeable if it is 1972 electric shift. He most likely misread the model number.

I don't think the 40 came as an electric shift in 1972 - they were all back to mechanical shift by then. If it is an electric shift model, it would be no newer than 1970. All of the 40hp Electric shift models used a similar lower unit, but they did change the control boxes along the way to move the key start off the dash and into the control box... The plugs at the motor-end also changed.

Parts listings at shop2.evinrude.com are pretty good at sorting things out...

My bad I think I had to many windows opened. Looks like the 72s are all manual shifts and I believe that is when they also made changes the leg style.

That is not a 1972 Evinrude, that is a 1969 Evinrude Lark 40. Parts are compatable with your Johnson Electramatic.

40972 is indeed a 1969 model year. Do NOT look at the 72 for the year in the model number, rather look at the 9 from that era....

I have a '72 40 hp with electric shift and it is a Lark V. Initially, I though it was older but according to the serial number, it's a '72. Just wish I had a good home for it.

No, you do Not have a 1972 40hp with electric shift!!! There is no such animal. Perhaps somebody has been monkeying around with the serial number.
