I have had this engine one season and all has been fine. Boat was in the water 5 months and had quite a lot of growth on the bottom and engine at the end. When I took the boat out of the water the lift operation was irratic or didn't respond at all. When I got the boat home I was able to get the motor into the 'supported' position but the motion of the lift motor was jerky. Does the lift motor need replacing or might it be something else? I am new to outboards so am a little lost.

May be that your tilt bracket bushings are in dire need of lube. There are two grease zirks (one on each bushing) on the boat side of the tilt bracket.Try pumping a liberal amount of fresh grease into both and actuate the T/T motor up and down and see if it frees up.
