I am thinking of purchasing a newer boat which has a 90 hp Johnson 2 stroke outboard on it. The problem is I was told one of the pistons was recently replaced because of an oil injection issue. Is this something that I should be concerned about and walk away. Are there known inherant problems with these outboards. I don't want to make a purchase and regret it. The boat was repaired at a reputable local marina. Thanks for any input.

Most reputable shops will do a few things besides replacing a piston to ensure that the motor does not repeat the failure.

Ask to see the repair order, look for a fuel pump, water pump or impeller, thermostats, and carb kits.

Like I said, most reputable shops will insist on ALL of the above with any and all rebuilds to ensure the motor does not repeat the piston failure.

Ask to talk to the marina mechanic who repaired the motor. In doing so, I would ask about how thw repair was done and what was done to eliminate the underlying problem, namely the injection issue.

You can also have your own mechanic examine the motor. If so, having that person talk to the other mechanic may be very productive.

I also suggest that you make another post with information on the model year of the motor. There are quite a few folks here with enough broad ranged experience, to offer an opinion of reliability issues, etc.

Yes it would, it's a 2005. Thanks for the replies so far guys. I am going to look at this boat tomorrow and will talk with the mechanic as to the repairs made.
