I recently bought an angler 17 foot center console boat with a johnson 90 hp v4 outboard. I took the boat out one weekend and everything was fine. The following weekend i took it out again and when i went to get on plane the motor started sputtering at 3000 rpm. I stopped and pulled the plugs and i found water on the bottom port side cylinder. I changed both head gaskets and exhaust plate gaskets and im still getting water in that cylinder.

Need a mod number to better identify the engine.

Ought to be on a sticker port side engine bracket or a dime sized welch plug on top of cylinder block.

Look on top of the engine cylinder head for a quarter sized silver plug it should have the numbers on it.

One could assume then seeing you changed the exhaust cover gaskets the mtr is a 90* cross flow and not a 60* mtr ???

Do a compression check while you look for the model # & report back.

The 90* would be considered a cross flow design. The 60* would have to be considered a looper. The difference being is the way the fuel/air charge enters the combustion chamber in the mtr.

oh ok. well heres an update. i took the head back off and got them resurfaced and reinstalled them with new head gaskets. i also got a new base gasket and installed that. I made a fuel mixture in a clean 5 gallon gas can and hook that up to the motor to eliminate the onboard fuel tank. Im still getting water in the lower left cylinder (standing from the rear of the boat) I noticed there are two tiny rubber tubes that go from the front lower part of the intake manifold to the side of the two upper cylinders. The starboard side tube when i disconnect it from the side of the cylinder and start the motor gas oil mix comes out. when i disconnect the port side tube from the upper cylinder a milky brown water gas oil mix comes out. to be more specific #2 in this picture is where the milky water gas mix is coming out of

When you had the exhaust covers off did you look for a hole burned or corroeded in the exhaust cover plate ??

yes i did

update today i removed the power head and completely took apart the motor all the way down to the bare block. I checked everything for cracks and didnt find anything. Come to find out the block is a 115hp block with 90hp exhaust plates and i believe that is the problem.

If you had a mixture of exhaust manifolds that would require an odd combination of exhaust gaskets. That could account for water leakage into the exhaust cavity. Does the 115 block have the exhaust filler blocks installed? If so, I'd be looking for a set of used 115 exhaust manifolds and matching gaskets.
