I was trying to verify the point settings on my 1976, 9.9hp Johnson motor and I noticed the Armature Plate is sloppy side to side which influences the points gap because of that movement. I also see contact between the coils and the flywheel which tells me there is too much movement.
I have 2 questions:
1. Does the armature plate pilot on the large armature bearing or does it pilot on the smaller diameter that interfaces with the Crank Case Head? I would assume the larger bearing diameter, but I do not see any unusual wear on the bearing or armature plate interface which I think I would.
2. After I get the movement resolved, do I set the point gap when lined up with the shaft key?

Thanks in advance for the help!

On the smaller diameter inner bearing surface (pulled from a prior post):

Lateral play in arnature plate will change point gap when it moves, changing timing on points opening when spark occurs. I fix by pulling armatureplate and modifying the boss it ‘rides’ or pivots on. Use a center punch/hammer and lightly punch the sides of boss at 12-3-6-and 9 o’clock. This will effectively increase the bosses diameter by leaving 4 small waves of metal at punch sites. Dry fit armature plate and check lateral play. Should be better.. now punch the same 4 holes again and test fit.. eventually, all play will be gone, and slight resistance in plate pivoting. This is where you want it. Add a dab of grease to your punch marks, reassemble, set points and go fish!
This fix works long term. Good luck!

PS.. should be a ‘set’ mark on the cam, a bit counter-clockwise from the key ..actually has the word ’set’. Set each pointset to .020.

Thanks for the reply. I will take a look at it tomorrow. From a curious standpoint, what does the larger plastic Armature Bearing do if it doesn't pilot the armature?
