Hey,
I just recently picked up an old johnson 9.9 figure it's a late 70's model.
It's a low hour motor from a friend that hadn't used it in years, I brought it home knowing it would need a little clean up but I'm totally new to these things.
It has good compression and seems as everything would be fine for what I intend to do with it however it will not go into forward or reverse.
The tiller throttle was a little sticky but got it free'd up and working properly... but it just will not shift.
Prop spins fine as does the flywheel etc.
Is there a quickish solution to this issue or?
I have the identical motor evinrude brand sitting next to it that works perfectly... would be sweet to have this johnson fixed for an upcoming camp trip this Tuesday.

any info is appreciated.

well i would drop the lower unit, and see it it is in the upper or lower shift linkage. it needs to come off anyway for the water pump service.
