Johnson 9.9 hp Sea Horse

Hi: I'm a first timer that has just purchased this motor. The Model No. & Serial No. Plate on the motor mounting Bracket has been removed. Is there any other way to find out this info. There are no markings on the motor cover - I was told it is a 9.9 hp Johnson long shaft. The only markings are Sea Horse on the Motor cover - also there are part numbers on the engine parts. I checked the crankcase - not stamped there?? Frustrated Frank thanks.

Look for a large silver colored casting plug on the side of the engine block.<br /><br />The mod. and serial numbers should be there.

Just checked - there is a silver plug on the top of the engine block "M" at top then "C0040624" this doesn't look like either?? Thanks for the quick response!

"M" means OMC (Outboard Marine Corp.)<br /><br />"C0040624" is the serial number.<br /><br />Someone will be along with a model year and other data from that serial number.

I've got very little information on Canadian serial numbers from that range other than their model number tags seem to fall off a lot around then. I could only find this one on Iboats:<br />C0053928 1974<br />The 9.9hp engines first came out in '74. Before that there were the totally different (somewhat funny-looking) 9.5hp engines. <br />If it is a '74, then it ought to have a decal on the side of the cowl that reads "Johnson" followed by a seahorse emblem. The bottom of the decal has three lines going all the way across. On the front top of the cover is a little trim peice that has the seahorse emblem followed by 'Seahorse'. The ignition coils will look like this:<br />

<br />instead of a block shaped thing. Those coils were only used between '74 and '76 on the 9.9s.<br /><br />Hope this helps!<br /><br />EDIT: Almost forgot, it ought to be green. They went to white in '77.

Paul - Thanks ;; I had high hopes. No decal on the side. What is the cowl? Cover? On the cover is Sea-Horse then the emblem, this is a rectangular raised section, red & yellow in colour. The coils really don't look like that, they have a half encased look about twice the height of the one in the picture. They are cylindrical in shape though. I was told that this motor was 10 - 15 years old, but who knows? Nowhere on the motor does is say Johnson!! I do appreciate your time an effort - Thanks<br /><br />The motor is all white!

I'm no expert on this, I just know where to look. <br />Here's the '77-'84 coil:<br />

<br />There is just one of these coils on the '91- engines.<br /><br />That's kind of a bad picture of the '74-76 coil. Fortunately there's a picture of a '76 powerhead on ebay right now:<br />Click here. That's a blue evinrude engine in a green '76 Johnson outboard, by the way.<br /><br />So it seems like the cowl has been repainted given that there aren't any decals, eh? What colour is the engine painted?

Yes Sirs: We have a friend down the road with digital Camera and will be trying to post a pic shortly. Again Thanks to the Both of yous.<br /><br />Edit: Cowl (cover), Engine and Lower half all an egg shell creamy white colour. Cowl could have been painted but it is scratched in places and there is no different colour beneathe!!<br /><br />Edit again: The pic on E-bay looks close but the coils are black with the bottom half open. The engine case is the same colour as the rest of the motor, creamy white, with a little rust. Workin on getting a few pics ready to send - Thanks

Ok, now we're getting somewhere! Can't be a '74-76 or there would be green paint showing somewhere for sure. I'll keep watching for those pics.

None of those coils look right. When I say half encased - I guess it's vertical, left half black plastic, right half---- never mind pics to follow

I agree. There are two screw holes where the plate was attached. I was the one who scratched it to see if there was anything stamped underneathe - no such luck.<br /><br />Edit: I assume the plate has fallen off. I hope this motor was not stolen in the past. If so and we can find the owner it would be returned. But we are assuming it fell off. Just bought the motor yesterday from out of province, not NS, it was PEI.

Ah, don't worry about it being stolen. For some reason, plates from around that time seem to fall off pretty frequently. My '72 has rusting steel 'nails' holding it's plate on so maybe that's why. My earlier '60s engines used stainless 'nails'.<br />I get suspicious if they also pop off the welsch plug with the serial number. I think this is on the up and up, but so far I've got it pinned down to '77-'79 for sure.

Thanks Boys: Machinist - yes we looked at that site and still reviewing . Everyone says that the 25cent plug on the top of the motor should have the model No. on it, but there is only 1 # - C0040624 - which doesn't seem to jive with anything in the pre 1980 listing or after. DJ says this is the serial no. - no way to search serial no. only eh? Thanks
