johnson 9.9 choke problems switch setting

The motor starts but unless you keep pushing in on the key it dies the choke lever is red but not sure <br />where to set it

You will need to get the carb cleaned or rebuilt...the low speed jet is plugged up...or the carb is not getting any fuel.<br /><br />I believe that your primer injects into the manifold...bypassing the carb.<br /><br />OR you have a choke plate in the carb.<br /><br />This is not known as not enough info on the engine has been given.<br /><br />TMD

Thanks the motor is a 1993 johnson electric start it has a metal tank still not sure if the red lever is in right position could it be bad gas or can I try to run it with the cap off to allow air in tank

If you can press the choke button and the engine keeps running...the choke is working properly. You will have to take the low speed needle out and blow some air through it.<br /><br />This would be a cheap fix...sometimes it works.<br /><br />The biggest fear though would be a plugged high speed jet aswell.<br /><br />TMD

pushing the choke in is the only way to keep it running . So you are saying that I could plug the other jet by trying to keep it running
