Johnson 9.5 hp won't start.

I recently bought a Johnson 9.5 hp outboard from someone on Craigslist. The previous owner said it ran but has been sitting a few years. Went and got new gas for it, tried to start it and nothing. Wouldn't even turn over. So I poured gas/oil mixture down the carb and it started on the second pull. But died out after a few seconds. Took the carb apart and cleaned it up good, reinstalled it, and still no luck. The only way I could get it to run was to keep pouring the fuel mixture right down the carb. Any suggestions?

Did you clean the high speed jet ?----It is an often overlooked item.----Found way inside the carburetor bowl in behind the drain plug.

can the engine run if you pump the bulb ??

is the fuel pump working ?? disconnect it at the carb inlet and turn the flywheel with a few good pulls check for fuel flow

is the fuel reaching the fuel pump ?? (bad hose dirty tank pick up …???)

pull the 7/16 bolt at the front... carb bottom and blow carb cleaner ... the HS get is way at the back

worst case run a VERY VERY small wire past the HS jet ( get the crud out and reblow with carb cleaner and compressed air)

Yes, I made sure to take the bolt out and spray the hole very well. Maybe didn't get it good enough. No, the engine will not run if I pump the bulb. Fuel is getting to the bowl of the carb, so I don't think there would be a blockage in any of the lines on the way there. I ordered a carb rebuild kit and new fuel pump/filter hoping that will solve the problem.

Just rebuilt the carb and installed a new fuel pump and still no luck. I noticed the carb doesn't have part #41. Could that be causing an issue? Also I didn't fill the gas tank up all the way, maybe half a gallon. Should I fill it up all the way and then try it?

no expert on the 9.5s, but a compression and spark test would be appropriate (open air adjustable tester, both plugs removed).

You still don't have a clean carb. If there is fuel in the float bowl and it runs when fuel is dumped into the carb, then fuel is not getting from the carb into the engine. Mixture screws set correctly? Were they removed and the ports cleaned? Spraying a carb is not cleaning it.

Yes, I followed that video when I rebuilt it, made sure ever channel was clean and fuel flowed through it. Not sure what else it could be.

A good magneto will produce up to 28000 volts.-----That will jump a gap of 5/16" or more with a ---SNAP , SNAP---You can hear.----So does your magneto pass that test, yes or no ?
