from the model number i have a johnson 9.5 model#9R69S. the motor runs fine. it rpms up and down fine in neutral but going down the waterway it acts like it is bogging like i have a rope caught in the prop. it doesnt kill the motor but just bogs down. one more thing, when the motor is off, sometimes it doesnt go in forward or reverse unless i turn the prop. it has a new prop and sheer pin. it is on a 14' johnboat and i will admit it has hit a couple of oyster reefs which has stalled the motor. i checked the oil in the lower unit. a hint of water but 98% oil. hoping someone can point me in the right direction. i have been lurking/searching the forum. thanks in advance.

shifting is perfectly normal, the gear and clutch dog have to line up to shift.
besure to use new seals on the lower unit drain and vent plugs, # source of water intrusion.

check your spark and compression both above 60 PSI with in 10% of each other is great. your bogging is probably ethanol poisioning. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=299680 carb kit: dealer only or BRP site CARBURETOR REPAIR KIT, PART NUMBER 382048

compression checked ok and good spark. i did change the fuel line/bulb and cleaned the screen on the fuel tank. i found a small leak at the big screw on the fuel pump when you pumped the bulb. i turned it in til it stopped leaking while pumping the bulb. is there a proper way to set that screw on the pump? i drained and put new gear oil in the lower unit. carb was clean on the inside. i read about putting 2+4 conditioner in the fuel to help (yes or no?). the motor starts and runs smoother now and tomorrow i will find the closest body of water to take it on a test run.

i took the boat out today to run it through the paces. started fine, stayed running til i turned it off and then restarted on the first pull again. the problem on the water is that it just would not open up. when i got it home and was flushing it in a water bucket, i took the cover off and found fuel leaking from the hose going to the carb. is using zip ties normal practice instead of hose clamps? anyway, i put a hose clamp on the hose and the little motor screamed. i was ready to take it back to the water and run it again.

new question, the prop is the kind with the rubber hub. it is a 8x7 and from reading the stock prop is the 8 1/4x8 1/2. there is a little spinage play on the hub and beat up from oyster shells. do yall think it could be slipping and should i look for the stock size prop? from this diagram, there is about 5 sizes to choose from depended on what i am using the boat for. http://www.propcopropellers.com/evinrude_Outboard_Prop.htm

I have a 9 1/2 johnson and can tell you that unless you are running real light on weight you do not want a 8 1/4 x 8 1/2. You will never get the rpm's up.

I have a 98 Johnson 8 hose motor that does the same thing but will sputter once in a while like it wants to pick up and go. have you figured out your problem with yours? if so please let me know as soon as possible

i was looking at the diagram i found on the different size props and had to think about what i am using the little boat for. everybody wants a boat that can jump out of the water and fly across the water but i use it to run trot and sail lines and backwater fishing. it is usually loaded with bait and a monster(kid) or two plus being a larger framed man, i was thinking of trying the smaller 8 x 6 1/2 heavy load prop.
