I took my newly acquired and recently installed 115hp engine to the lake yesterday and I was so disappointed. The engine lacked power and a strange sound was coming from somewhere near the carbs or maybe the flywheel.

Does anyone know where this sound is coming from and what could cause my engine to die out whenever I tried to apply full power. I added a 50:1 2 stroke oil into the gas but it was smoking a lot.

Please see this vid for the noise.

I would appreciate any help anyone can provide. I'm completely lost as far what's the next steps that I need to take.
Thanks for your time.

I am not sure whats making that noise. I would check compression and spark with a spark gap tester.

i'm thinking in changing the spark plugs but I'm not sure which one should I get.
It's for a OMC Seadrive 1.6L powerhead probably 87.

Last night I checked the compression again and it seems to be around 90-95 for each cylinder.
I'm lost as to what could be causing the strange noise. Could it be the flaps?
Please help.

Re: Lost

you may want to pop off the fly wheel and check out the stator and magnets....It is very hard to tell where the sound is coming from unless I could hear it in person. I have never heard an outboard do that. compression is good.

Re: Lost

Finally a break, I think I figured out where the noise is coming from. It's from the VRO pump. However this engine had the oil tank removed long time ago. So, I'm supposing that the VRO pump functions as a oil pump and fuel pump rolled into one.

Now my question is do I need to replace this pump?
I called someone local and they quoted me over $350 for a new pump, is there a way to fix the old one?

Thanks for any insight.

Re: Lost

you can rebuild the fuel side, parts at maxrules.com . 350 is cheap for that pump, mostly I see them for over $400.

Wow, expensive suckers. Thanks for the link for the rebuild kit, I'll order one since it's much cheaper.
