Started up a used 70 hp 1985 Johnson outboard, motor backfired and no longer had a spark. Trouble shoot motor and found bad stator. I checked the wiring on the power pack and found the orang wire with green trace going to the top cylinder and the orange with blue trace going to bottom cylinder. After reading other post it sounds like the wires should be reversed, could this have damaged the stator in the 1st place?

Thanks

I don't see how that could hurt the stator, but it sure wouldn't run like that. The thing to remember is green=grass= lower- Blue=sky=up, works that way on tilt and trim wires too.
