Re: Johnson 6hp 1974 info
Welcome to Iboats, boaterpaulw!

Your outboard uses a 50:1 fuel oil mix. That's 1 pint of oil for 6 gallons of gas, or 20ml per litre of gas. Use TC-W3 rated outboard 2-stroke oil and 87 octane gas.
The lower unit lube is OMC (now Bombardier Recreational Products) "HiVis", which is equivalent to a 90 weight outboard gearcase lube. (Do not use standard gear lube as it often doesn't provide for water intrusion). The lower unit lube needs to be changed at least seasonally by you or your local dealer. All grease points should be lubed at least yearly too.
Spark plugs are champion J6C gapped at .030". J6C replaces the old J6J plug.
Like almost all other outboards, the water pump needs to be serviced every couple seasons at a minimum. Overheating due to a bad pump can destroy the engine. This is not a difficult task for the DIYer, unless it hasn't been done in a long time.
With salt water usage, all those maintanace items become far more important.
