JOHNSON 55 HP TILT PIN QUESTION

ON MY NEW TO ME 1987 55 HP TILLER MANUAL START LONGSHAFT I CAN'T SEEM TO GET THE TILT PIN INTO THE LOWEST HOLE ON THE SWIVEL BRACKET. IF I START IT THROUGH ONE SIDE IT COMES INTO CONTACT WITH THE TRIM ASSIST CYLINDER AND WON'T MAKE IT TO THE OTHER HOLE. EVERYTHING SEEMS TO BE AS IT SHOULD AS FAR AS THE BRACKETS AND THE TILT CYLINDER GO. i AM ASSUMING OMC WOULD HAVE MADE THAT LOWEST HOLE ACCESIBLE. I TRIED A SMALLER DIAMETER TILT PIN BUT EVEN THAT WOULDN'T GO IN WITHOUT CONTACTING THE TILT CYLINDER. NOTE THIS MOTOR DOES NOT HAVE POWER TRIM, JUST THE SIMPLE ASSIST CYLINDER (NOT THE TOUCH TRIM STYLE THAT USES A HANDLE TO PUT INTO RAISE OR LOWER POSITION). SORRY FOR SO MANY POSTS COVERING DIFFERENT QUESTIONS ON THIS OUTBOARD I JUST AM TRYING TO SORT IT ALL OUT. THANK YOU

During the 36 years that that engine has been around it may well be that the bracket has been changed out for a non original one

I don't think it's been changed. They come in half brackets that fit together. Motor is all original

I’m not sure why you would need a tilt pin if you have tilt assist. If you need to change your pitch you can move the bottom pin of the tilt assist cylinder to the appropriate whole.

It's not tilt assist its a tilt aid. Tilt assist uses a paddle looking handle on the starboard side with a cable going to the cylinder. Mine is just a basic looking cylinder.

Here's the pics. The last picture shows the pin making contact with the cylinder not allowing it to line up with the lowest hoke on the port bracket.

Oh man. Do you think I just wasn't tilting it high enough to get the pin in? I'll tilt all the way up and engage the lock to see if it goes in.

Tilting all the way got me closer but still no good. I'll have to check brackets to see if any adjustments can be done
