i have a j50tlco 1985 johnson question ; can i replace the clutch dog and reverse gear without taking the pinion and drive shaft out? have a service manual but it isnt clear about this, or im not understanding it. thanks for your help:joyous:
thanks very much bonz-d i suppose smart thing would be to disassemble check all parts then order parts needed. may look at salvage site. thanks again for your help:wof::biggrin-new:
I'm in the same boat!!!! The forward gear is sold as a gearset with the pinion gear and is quite pricey. The one thing you will need for sure is a stout pair of split ring pliers. The big ones from Harbor Freight don't work, they are not sturdy enough to hold the ring and compress it enough to clear the groove.
