I have a Johnson 50 that’s been sitting for about 8 years and I’ve finally decided to get it running again. I started with replacing the tank and fuel lines and flushing the pump out the best I could. I have clean gas coming through the lines. I had the carbs dipped in a ultrasonic tank and rebuild already my issue is the motor will only fire and run while at half choke and my hand cover one carb. I do get some gas on my hand amd the motor will not idle or start with out the choke on. I have checked compression and I have 150 on each cylinder. I’m stomped maybe bad reed valves??
It’s a 2004 Johnson 50 2 stroke. Help needed!!!

Was it stored with fuel in the carburetors.-----Having to use choke clearly indicates carburetors need attention !!----I am quite sure it is NOT a reed valve issue.----They rarely fail !

The carb were just cleaned and rebuilt by a marine shop. When I cover the face of the carb there gas on my hand like the valve are allowing fuel back through the carb.

maybe crankcase vacum is not strong enough to properly suck in gas without the help of extra choking... 150psi... on the compression does nothing to help crankcase vacuum on the upstrokes .

saw e utube where the mechanic used a propane gas torch to supply propane (unburnt) to (around) the crank upper and lower seals

give it a try and tell us what happens

start with checking carb bolt nuts, cover bolts etc....
look real closely for cracks
apply temporary coating of grease to seal air leaks

Just check the carbs, if vro is hooked up the carb bowls may have filled with oil. It happens sometimes.
