I have just acquired a Johnson 4 hp model BJ4BREDS. I believe the year is 1996 but can someone explain the other letters and tell me if the engine is standard or long shaft.

Many thanks
Ian in England

The model number indicates it's a standard lenght shaft, but to be certain measure from the part of the transom clamp that contacts the top of the transom to the anti-ventilation plate directly above the propeller. If you measure close to 15" then it's a short (standard) shaft, if it's 20" then it's a long shaft.

Hope this helps!

RickDB1Boat's picture explains it better.
