Hey ppls my names Tyler and im an 18yr old maverick mechanic from Kelowna B.C. Canada with 3 years work experience ,and a 5 month pre apprenticeship powersport technician course under my belt. I have alot of capital into my illegitimate buisness and ive been doing quite well . My question is about my Johnson 4hp seahorse . I have many carb rebuild kits and parts to work with but nothing is working. when I put the float bowl back together the inlet needle for the fuel seems to get closed completly , its like the float is too big for the carb, but its not. is there a trick to setting the float in these carbs . when I close up the bowl it seems to seal everything closed and fuel wont flow. i know what im doing its just this little motor thats gettin me. anyone have a diagram to how the carb should be set i dont know i spent 2 hours today messin with it. please help ******* EDIT: Email address is forbidden ********

The float is supposed to be parallel with the carb body when the carb is held upside down. Bend the tab that the needle is hanging on to adjust. Or put the float in the correct side up. :) You may have it upside down...

If I understand you correctly the little tab is on the top but as tx1961whaler says generally if you flip the carb upside, holding the float pivot in place if necessary, so that the weight of the float is holding the needle valve shut the float should be parallel with the carb body. It should be free to fall when the thing is right way up enough for the needle to open fully.

The needle valve is not sticking or blocked?

You do not say what year (or model number this engine is) but if it is 1968 or later you will be able to find an exploded diagram. HERE which may help.

BTW it is not smart to put your email address on here! (may even be against the rules)

It seems you are telling us that you are working on these things without a Service Manual, Samus. That would be a foolish amatuer move.

Get the factory manual. Modest investment that will pay off for years.

Thank you for posting guys your all so helpful I wanna pay you.
You say amatuer I say A little knowledge/formal education on the subject is all thats needed. I do everything from full tear down/rebuild to simple condensers and impellers. I know it is foolish :D but not amatuer. I have lots to learn I guess? . I am young but I have already owned ALOT more outboards then you have. this is my 46th and it has such a basic problem. Im just thinkin' someone messed this carb right up. Mabye thats why my 2-3-4-6-and 15 were all under 150$ (my price) when I looked 5 mins ago the tiny tang thats usually on the float has been clipped off ( I know its been cut because theres no way for it to wear off ) And also sorry bout' posting the email.. should I remove it.

Samus, I have been messing with outboards including small JohnnyRudes since before your dad was born. I have probably worked on several hundred 3 and 4HP JohnnyRudes.

I still will not touch one without the Manual at hand.

I admire your confidence, but perhaps you can benefit from what others have learned.

I do remember how much wiser my Dad became between my 15th and 21st years.
