johnson 40hp 1968

i have been told this engine can only be run on 4 star leaded petrol not 4 star lead replacement.is this true and if so where can you get it?

It's not true. Lead never did anything special for an outboard.

Lead's primary function in gas was as a lubricant.

40 Hp won't run in water

40 Hp won't run in water

Hey there everyone, I have a problem with my '68 40 Hp, it will run fine with the muffs on with the garden hose attached for water, It runs like a dream, but as soon as I put it in the lake and try to run it, It will only run for 10-15 seconds before stalling out. Then I can pull the boat right out of the water again and it runs fine!? Im stumped, any suggestions?
