Johnson 35 HP wiring question....

I bought an 1988 16' lund fishing boat. It needs some sprucing up, but I'm on top of it. Got it on the cheap....Really cheap!!! He was an older retired fella that used it everyday...He'd won a walleye tourney up here in Wisconsin and his prize was a new Lund 18"....So I got it for less than $500.
I need to re-wire much of the motor.....Wires are so old and frayed up that they won't hold constant current.
My question is....
The 1977 25-35 HPJohnson service manual wiring diagram shows two red wires coming off of the positive terminal on the starter solenoid.....One is for a 20 AMP in-line fuse (I believe....Please correct me if I'm mistaken) ....
The other wire in the diagram goes nowhere at all....Does it just terminate? Do I need to connect this red wire to anything.
My motor is a 35ELL77H...I've had the motor running...But it is rough and intermittent....Some times it starts right up....Other times it will only turn over. (No spark to the plugs) I believe putting some new wires from the bottom half of the 5 wire waterproof rubber connector will solve the issues I'm having.
Can anyone tell me what this wire is for?

Thanks in advance.....

Go to the sticky on top of the page, and click on wiring diagrams (Mastertech site). The 25-35 hp '82-'83 has a red wire from the solenoid to the red lead for the rectifier, via the terminal block. If there is no red wire sharing the connection for the rectifier lead on your motor, that may be where your loose red lead goes, as suggested.

If that's the case, the rectifier may be burned out -- no battery charging, possibly some other operational issues.

edit. The rectifier is the triangular shaped device with three yellow/yellow stripe wires and a red one -- side of the engine; leads connect to the terminal with screws (usually ring connectors).

Okay I have the issue rectified now...
Next question...
Is the neutral switch connection from the neutral side of the solenoid a small male spade quick diconnect located on the engine casting?

The white wire slides onto the nuetral switch, just one wire is connected..---------Just one wire.------------And those switches can be taken apart for cleaning if it does not work properly.

It took me nearly three days to troubleshoot my motors wiring issues....The neutral start switch is faulty.....I've grounded the wire to the motor and it starts and runs fine now....I will just need to be cautious when starting the motor because now it can be started in gear. when I have the time I'll try to replace it or see if it can be repaired.

I'll be posting photos in the restoration forum later on today. I'll be doing a simple utility restoration because I'd like to do some fishing and a couple of weeks. maybe something a little deeper in the fall.

I'm having issues with my motor... Initially I had to rewire the entire motor. I had it running well but there was a slight misfire. At the top end of the throttle. I made some simple adjustments with the low idle adjustment needle. But the issue was with timing. Is there a cam follower adjustment? I still need to adjust my timing but for some reason the carburetor and the timing didn't seem to react respectively. I read somewhere that there was a linkage to sync both of them together. Does this make sense? I'm trying to do all of this with manuals and YouTube videos. Also... is there a tutorial or a sticky on the Iboat forums for adjusting the timing on a 1977 35 horsepower Johnson motor?

Spark advance and sync with carburetor are two different topics. Spark advance is set using a timing light and the screw in the port side bracket. I don't have the service manual for that motor, so can't tell you much more than that. Long story made short, you need the service manual--or somebody that does have one. Guessing at it can spell disaster to internal engine parts.

The motor starts and runs but it sputters slightly at normal idle. I have the low idle adjusted to just before it cuts out. I can come into the dock at idle. It sputters slightly.... at higher speeds it's sputters quite a bit. I had one good backfire while running at lower speeds. Now I can get no more power past half throttle. Even when the throttle is wide open

How do I determine where the top and bottom cylinders are in correlation to the coil packs on the Magneto once the flywheel is removed? Is the back coil always the top cylinder?

???-Are you confusing the conventional magneto with the electronic ignition ?----There is one sensor coil and one charge coil.---Both are used to fire top and bottom.

I don't think so... There are two large coils... Two condensers for each coil... Then points and insulators 4 top and bottom cylinders. Am I mistaken?

My motor is described as a 35ELL77H
I don't know how else to describe it to you... It does have electric choke but I disabled it because the solenoid went crappy on me and it annoyed me.
