Johnson 33hp - Questions

I am brand new to outboard engines. I have a 1958 boat (which I can't find any info on either lol) It has a 33hp Johnson. So far I haven't been able to locate any model number on it. Any other ideas where to look?

I have been reading a lot of the posts and did the lower until oil change this weekend.

The engine runs and seems to run fine...but has no power in the water. From what I have read it sounds like the carbs need to be rebuilt (which I plan on doing as soon as I can figure out what model this engine is.)

The engine occasionally pops and sputters a bit...is this probably due to the dirty carbs? Or is this something to do with the points, coils etc?

Should I change it all?

Any help is appreciated!

Re: Johnson 33hp - Questions

That's a nice looking boat. I think the model/serial number plate would be located on top of the steering bracket. Else, check the side of the transom clamp.
A compression and spark test is a good place to start if you haven't checked already. You want to check condition of the motor before putting money into it. Report your results back here.

Re: Johnson 33hp - Questions

As previously mentioned, first check compression, and then spark. If it has good compression, most other issues can be easily addressed. If it has good spark on both cylinders, then your issue is probably with the carb. Ignition parts for the 50's and 60's 2 cylinder motors were all pretty much the same for many years. Carb kit for your 33hp motor is Sierra 18-7010, available here on Iboats.
