Hi Guys,
I just received two motors from my grandfather a clinton montgumery ward K300(no idea what year) and a Johnson 10 hp. I put new sparkplugs in the clinton and it started right up but the johnson is alott different. when i take out the sparkplugs and pull the starting cord the pistons move with little effort but when i put in the sparkplugs the cord becomes extremeley difficult to pull back whatis wrong. I have no clue what to do to it, i tried oiling the pistons but it doesnt work. i need some tips. thanks

You might have the wrong spark plugs in it. There were a few manufacturers who actually thought that they could make a spark plug for the old Johny/Rudes and it didn't work out. NGK made the threaded shank too long and the pistons would slam the gaps closed. The best plug for that old Johnson is a J6C Champion. They're actually under a different number now, but your local marine supply will know what you're talking about.

Also. get a compression guage and see what your readings are.

Most likely your coils are shot and it won't crank either way. But, you should spray some lube oil in the spark plug holes and some premix fuel/oil in the carb throat to get the main bearings and such a little lube. If it's been sitting for years, sometimes they get so dry they'll so what you describe.
Good luck--I really enjoy my '55 QD, and run it often.

Re: Johnson 1955 QD-16

The motor was sitting in a garage for about ten years afterit was winterized. When i look at the engine itself is extremely clean and was running great before being winterized.I tried the spark plugs that were in motor when i got it and it still does the same thing, the cord being extremely hard to pull back and when i remove the sparkplugs it becomes easy again. i have sprayed lube in the spark plug holes and it does little help if none for me. How can i access the coils? and tell if they need tp be replaced and if they need to be how do i do that? I have been around boats all my life, mostly four strokes. But thanks for the advice

P.S. does anyone know how to fix the tankside fuel connection for a preassureized tank, i can not get it to fitt to the male end on the motor and they are the parts that came with the engine.

The o-rings in your connector are probably hardened. YOu will have to pick them out witha dental pick after depressing the pins down on their springs. You can also do a search, I believe, on aomci.org's ask-a-member section and there's several threads with this info on there.
If your motor was run in the last 10 yrs., it may have newer coils. If they're "sweaty" or cracked, they're toast. Here's a thread that may help, other helpful info in the "top secret files" thread at the top of this forum. Link: http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=294072

Can you elaborate what you mean when you say "o-rings in your connector" and maybe even link an exact part please? I seem to have the exact same problem where it is extremely hard to pull the pull cord. Like it takes all my strength to pull it and I know it shouldn't be like this. Thanks a million!

Thanks for the welcome......still looking, so if anyone has one, gimme a shout! : )

Hi Dan. Welcome to iboats. Here is a parts catalog and a tune up link for your motor. You can get a new starter assembly online from sites like ebay, aomci.org and here in the forums. You can get most routine parts like carb kits, coils, points & condensers, reseal kits, etc... right here at iboats for about $20 each.

Your best bet would be to post a wanted ad at aomci.org in the webvertize. Someone local to you will help out.

I think nwcove nailed it. You should be overjoyed that it has great compression. When properly tuned it only needs one pop to get it started. I have the same difficulity roping mine over but I'm a sepuagenarian.
