At first this engine was very hard to start cold but once it had ran it would restart as soon as you bumped the key. Now it wont start at all....no fire. Any suggestions where to start?

Start by identifing the year of the motor, or it's model number. If it is a magneto or ADI ignition, check the spark killer wire (usually black/yellow) to see that it is ungrounded by the ignition switch when you are trying to start it.

Also, make sure that the emergency kill switch is not closing the kill wire circuit.

You can disconnect the large red plug at the engine and try starting by jumping the engine with a jumper as indicated below. You will need to flood the engine or reconnect the red plug to stop the engine if it starts.

Sorry.....The engine is a 1990 175 GT. I only paid 2500.00 for the boat...A 1990 Hydra Sports 18' Tournament Special....knowing that the engine was hard starting but figured it had to be something simple if not even stupid.....Now i'm starting to wonder.

Check the spark like Ezeke mentioned. Check it with the key on. If you have none, unplug the red cannon plug and check it again.

When you say "no fire" we're assuming there is no spark. But you could mean you don't know if there's spark or not but it won't fire up (start).
