When looking over my 1983 johnson 15, i grabbed ahold of the fuel line that is at the left hand side of the fuel filter cover on the left side of the motor. A small amount of gas squitred out. I am afraid to further tighten the knurled knob to more tightly fit the black cover against the mesh filter. Is this normal or should i try to make it even snugger? I am afraid it will crack. Bob

Sounds like the gasket is shot. Remove it and check it out. It doesn't take that much pressure to seal it up. You should not have to crank it down that much to seal it. And yes, it will break something one way or the other if you continue to force it. If all else fails, get a new one. May be warped.. Are you sure it's not the fuel line leaking??
