Help!!
I'm new to this forum but I've utilized it many times. So thanks to all for that. I've traded for a 1979 Johnson 150 that had the block replaced with a 1986 model. Since I've had the motor I've replaced the starter, shaved the heads .050, replaced the mechanical choke carbs with purge style carbs and plugs and such. Compression on all 6 range between 90-100. Motor runs like a champ on the muffs in the driveway but when I take it to the lake and submerge the foot it doesnt want to idle!! I have to idle it around 1300 rpms. Even at 1300 rpms, when I try to engage the prop (which is not good at 1300 rpms) it will go dead. The motor POURS water out of the upper holes on the midsection, well, really just the port side hole. I thought these holes were exhaust reliefs but NO exhaust exits these holes. Thought maybe this might be a problem, restriction of exhaust. I do ALOT of motorcycle repair on the side but I am new to outboard motors. This thing has me stumped!! Any ideas other than setting it on fire would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!!
