Johnson 150 hp Check Engine Light

I have a 2000 Johnson 150 hp that I am having troubles with. The motor will not stay running and the check engine light goes on. From everything that I am reading it is due to a fuel restriction. Can you guys give me some ideas as to the most common causes to this problem? Thanks in advance.

welcxome to iboats. dirty carbs, fuel pump failing, sucking air, clogged filter, clogged pick up tube it fuel tank, clogged vent of fuel tank.

Thanks. This is a great forum. I wish I would have found this a long time ago! I am hoping that the fuel pump is not the issue because I have fuel getting to the plugs. What do you think? I also checked the filter and that was fine. I think I am going to look into the dirty carbs and pick up line and vent.

Hi there,
I have the same year engine model number is J150PLSIG.My first question would be are you original owner of themotor? Do you have the service records of it? When was th elast time carbs cleaned or rebuilt? Getting fuel into the cylinders doe snot mean anything .. it needs to get the right amount of fuel? Do you have aservice manual for this engine if not and if you are planing to keep it for a long time it is time to invest on one,...Part number for the service manual is 0787070 manual for the accesories is 0787065 amd part number for the owners maual is 0214713. Does the boat equipped with fule tank already int he hull or are you using carry on fuel tank? We need more info...

Hey Sammy. I am not the original owner of the motor so I don't have the service records and I don't know when the carbs were cleaned last. The boat has a built in tank. Once the problem started I replaced the plugs for the second time this year and took the boat out again. It seemed to run fine the first day just idling around a small lake. The next morning the boat started and the check engine light/alarm went on about 30 seconds after it started running. From that point on I could not get it started.

Dicer, The check engine light is controled by a vacuum switch on the fuel line at the powerhead. If the fuel line has a vacuum in it, the light is lit.

Check the antisiphon valve in the fuel tank pickup line, as well as any fuel filters external to the motor. Also clean the fuel screen on the vapor separator under the airbox.

I would follow chris1956's advise it really sounds like a you have a fuel delivery problem... This might sound very weird but do you have gas int he gas tank? ( do not ask how i learned that lesson) I just ordered a service manual for my motor and i will try to scan and email you the related parts.. to help you...

Thanks for all of your help guys. I think I actually figured it out last night. I tore apart the fuel line from the tank to the motor to look for any restrictions like you suggested. Once I pulled the primer ball off I notice something was loose inside. There is a spring and small plastic ball on the inbound and outbound sides of the ball. One of the spring/ball assemblies had come loose and I am thinking that it was blocking the flow of fuel. Once I put everything back together the motor seemed to run fine. I am so glad that this seems to have been an easy and cheap fix, but it is so frustrating that something so simple can give you such a big headache. Thanks again for all of your help guys.
