I have 89 model 140 johnson that up until this years has run great. It began losing power and stalling at idle and sometimes ran well and then just shut down and would not run. It has been in shop twice and the last time stator was replaced. It ran this past weekend as long as all power switches on the panel were off. Is the power pack about to go? Thanks for any help. First time post. Some very good info avail on the forum.

Re: Johnson 140 Power

Mike: This is a problem where you want to start right from the beginning! Start with a compression test, not more than 15 lb. difference between cylinders. A compression check is good, a leak-down test is better, pulling the head is best of all. If you see a 10 t0 15 lb. difference, pull the head. After all, this is a 14 year old motor. If all is well here, do an ignition test, spark should jump a 1/2" gap with plugs in, using a spark gap tester. Next, check all fuel fittings, and hoses. Run the engine on a hose, and with the air box cover off, feed each carb with a sqeese bottle filled with pre-mix fuel. This will tell you if all carb's are pulling the same. You could well have dirty carb's on this age engine. Again! don't dance around with the compression test, a decarb and all the adjusting in the world won't over come a bad cylinder. This can save you alot of time, and money.
