I'm trying to change the impeller on my motor but having a hard time removing the lower unit. I have a manual for the motor but still having trouble. It's telling me to remove the retaining clip fro the shift shaft. Were is that located exactly? Can please anyone help me.

The shift linkage on that engine uses a split type coupler located under the lower carb area.To disengage it disconnect the shift cable from the end of the shift arm. Then remove the hitch pin from the pivot point of the shift arm and push in or to 'port' on the shift arm.Removing the hitch pin allows the shift arm to be thrusted , separating the coupler from the shift rod that leads to it from the lower unit.

Is there any illustration I can view. The shift linkage looks like it comes out and bends up connecting to a the shift arm with a hitch pin..I guess. I need something to look at.

It may be a clip or it may be a bolt depending on your model. The best thing to do is have someone shift it from forward to reverse while you look under the carbs. If memory serves me correctly you'll see the linkage move up and down and that's what you need to connect. It's a shaft that you'll only see the end off coming up from your midsection into the lower engine cover through a rubber grommet (provide the grommet is still there). It's tight in there but you can get to it and it's easier to disconnect wiring and give yourself room instead of trying to work around everything.

You'll likely need a friend to help bolt it back up because you have to have I think 3 things lined up perfectly in order to reconnect.

You might also be able to see the shaft move by looking on the port side of the motor under the upper cover where the midsection connects to the upper cover. Right by your steering arm. Although to disconnect it you have to be inside the cover of course.

Good luck. If you really need a picture take some of your motor, under the carbs, post them for us and we'll point it out.

This can be a bear to get down. Make sure you have all the bolts. Some are hidden under the Trim Tab. On my 89 Johnson you just pull the pin off the throttle and then push in to disengage the pin holding the Shift linkage in. Definatly helps to have two guys. I put a small block ther to keep it pushed in so it can drop. Should be 6 or 7 bolts that need to come out.
