Hello!

1st time poster and new owner of a 1982 16 ft cobia bass boat with a Johnson 120, and I believe that it is a 1985 model, but not sure.

The motor has run great, but as of this last weekend, the motor started to stall a bit in the upper rpms, but runs ok under 3k.

I run a premix 50-1 and do not have the VRO set up. Upon looking at the fuel pump, I noticed that one side of the pump seemed to be wet from gas. I also noticed that gas/oil was running down the side of the motor upon putting the boat on the trailer. It also looks like the previous owner took the pump apart and used a sealant to seal it up.

I am leaning towards the fuel pump being bad, but I dont know a whole lot about boat motors, but I am equiped with a Seloc manual for this motor. I do know quite a bit about car and truck motor, so I'm not a total idiot.

I am wondering if their is a magical kit that can be used to fix this fuel pump, or will I just have to suck it up and buy a new one?

Any reccomendations on where I could buy a kit or a fuel pump? I really think that the local boat shops have $$$$ dreams, so I'm not wild about buying locally.

Welcome!!

Yes, there are several kits available depending on which era pump you have. Before you order anything, look at the housing real real close for any cracks. Hate to spend money on kits you cant use.

Is it a 3 wire pump or 4? What color is the outlet nipple going to the carbs? Is it permanent or replaceable?

Welcome Super, I would go back with a regular fuel pump (old style). You can get one for less than $5o.00 I believe. That may not be your problem but I'd replace it if it leaks. Check for air leaks. Also you may have trash in the highspeed circuit of one or both of your carbs. If your fuel lines are old, they may be deteriorating on the inside.
Good luck

You can run the old style fuel pumps on a looper but on a V4 1 is marginal at best. If you use them, use two.

Re: Johnson 120

Thanks for the warm welcome!

I've looked in my manual, but it states that I've got a tossable pump, and that's it...what a waste of money.

To be honest, I cannot find any wires running to the pump, but, I am sure that it is the fuel pump, because thats where the gas line goes.

The fitting that goes to the carbs is black, and appears to be fixed to the pump.

On the carb side of the fuel pump, there is a square cap with what looks like a place for a nipple, but that is broke off, which I am assuming is the place for the oil injection. I am also afraid that air has been leaking in thru this broken nipple.

There are only 3 hoses that go to this thing, one comes from the gas tank, one goes to the carbs, and one comes from the base of the motor, which I am assumeing is the vaccum line or something that runs the pump?

Where exactly do I need to look for the wires that run the pump?

Maybe I should just run out and remove the 2 bolts that appear to hold the assembly to the motor...

Unfortunately for me this motor appears to be a transplant from another boat.....and has a hodge podge of spaghetti wireing....but I am looking forward to going through this boat this winter to fix that.

I have seen some used VRO fuel pumps on ebay, would this be a viable alt?

I think youre right, the oil inlet nipple is broken and its sucking air in there. At this point I would, if it were me, just get the newer style pump to inherit all the upgrades. If you arent going to use the oil injection, just get the pump without the oil side on it. That'll give you the good high volume pump and save a few bucks.

Regardless I wouldnt run it like that.

The way it looks, it has ran this way for quite a while. I am also thinking this is what has been giving me alot of smoke at startup.

I will be replacing the whole thing.

Can anyone tell me the part number for the pump with out the oil side on it?

Is it essential to get a pump for a 120, or can I use pumps from other v-4s?

Thanks for all the help!

Re: Johnson 120

Well, I pulled the pump off and it seems to be fine other than the broken nipple, which I repaired with some super glue.

I still was unable to find any electrical wires to the pump...I must be mistaken, I thought it was run by electricity.

I'm still getting a bit of gas from the side of the motor, it apears that something may be sticking in the carbs... I'm going to try some seafoam and see if that does the trick, other wise it must be time for a set of carb kits.

What can I expect from doing the carbs on this motor, I've done quite a few motorcycle carbs, so I cant imagine it being any tougher...Is there any special tools that I need?

Anyone know the part number or what the new fuel pump might be?
