my 89 johnson 100 has been sitting on my boat for about a week now since i bought it. oil is leaking from the lower unit onto the prop where the prop meets the LU. its not milky or anything but yet it hasnt been in the water only run once or twice on a hose. i think its gear oil it doesnt smell like gas. could this be a seal gone bad?

what color is it? ( not the motor....the oil. lol). good chance its just unburnt oil from running on muffs/barrel. you could pull the prop, wipe the shaft down, and check it again at that area in a day or so.

The other thing you need to check is the Lower Unit oil level. Just keep an eye on it.

I agree with the above and it is probably 2 stroke oil residue...... common ;)

Worst case is it needs a shaft seal but I doubt it.

its a dark brown/black. i read about the unburnt oil but i didnt think it was that because i only ran it for about 3 min before i bought it. we did do a compression test before i took it home maybe that could be the reason? i will wipe it down and check it again thank you. it just seems like the same oil i saw when i checked the gear oil before i bought it. how would i know if it was a seal or not? and it doesnt seem like it but is that a comlicated fix?

if the gear oil was brown/black, you should change it! comp test wouldnt do it. will leave the complexity issue with replacing the seals..or non issue, to those who have done it. you can have the gearcase pressure tested tho. ( i just ran a much smaller motor, that hadnt been run in years, for ten minutes in a barrel, its messy !!!, but definitely not gear oil)
