Hoping to get clarification on a Johnson 100 HP commercial outboard model J100WTLESM. Long story short, lower unit was stored for a while with water in it & most components pitted & are now trash. Decided on a fun project to gut & rebuild it but reading the Seloc manual for pinion bearing removal/install, the V4 differs from the V6 & V8 removal methods. V6 & V8 calls for the bearing to be pulled from the top while the V4s say any generic driver can be used to punch it out down into the gear cavity. This comes from the Seloc manual for 1992-2001 All V Engines which is what I have so correct me if this is different for my 1990 engine.

The question I have is the book does not specify any commercial units which on a V4, has an oversized V6 lower unit & I want to make sure I’m not removing the bearing the wrong direction causing damage to the housing because of the tapered fit of the bearing. This engine definitely has the larger lower unit which has the larger hub prop & I just want to make sure I have the correct removal method before I start with removing the bearing.

For reference, the lower unit has the Phillips head set screw on the side which I have removed & everything else has been removed from the housing. Also have a skeg repair to weld up while it’s apart. To note, the Seloc book mentions special tool kit number 391257 for the V6 & V8 engines which I’m wondering if I’ll need given this has the larger lower unit.

Added a couple photos if they help show where I’m at with this lower unit.

Any help is greatly appreciated to figure this out so I can rebuild this lower unit & get this engine ready to sell so I can move on to other projects. Thanks in advance.
