Re: jigging spoons through the ice

Ice is finally thick enough. I went out sunday moring to a balmy minus 7 degrees. Drilled the holes and got the heater going and in ten minutes nailed a 3 lb walleye with a jigging rapala. No hits on the shiners or any pan fish. I talked to the bait shop guy and he said they weighed a 10 lb walleye in the asme area I was fishing. I guess the ideal time is two hours after sunset. I am going again this weekend. Sure feels good to be out again.

This may make sense, and then again, it may not...BUT, generally when you find many Perch in a particular area, you won't be blessed with walleye of any size. Don't need to tell most folks, but yellow perch are the larger walleye's prefered forage base if available.
Now, if you are catching small perch, this could be a bonanza area for good Wallys too...

cool beans Euro!.. Jigging Raps are fav's here too. Was out on Lake Waubesa (Madison Chain) last night with the brother and between the two of us had iced close to 30 eye's in 4 hours w/all but 6 under 15". kept 5-16's and tossed back an 18.

The system here on early ice (heck, any time for that matter) is when the Perch are on their bite and suddenly shut off or you get large red marks on the Vexilar durring.. snap up your Perch rig fast and drop a Jigging Rap that you have 'on deck'.. 9 outa 10 times Walter is making an appearance.

Barlow send me an email at ralgoetz@comcast.net. If we cant connect with the Gull Lake fishing tournament I want to come down there and fish for a day. I need someone to teach me a way to catch these walleyes before I start using pipe bombs on them.
