Well if I could only have one spoon. In the
north here, it would be a five of diamonds.

Mine is a super small jig that is white with a red spot on it whos name eludes me. Dress the hook with three live eurolarva and then three light taps on the pole for the jigging. Second is a minature jigging rapala with eurolarva on the belly hooks.

Don't use ice and don't need a spoon to stir it.

Straight up (neat) at room temp is just right. :D

* H i c k *

well good enough to catch a buzz with.. and keep ya warm JB

:D ;)

I'd bet a Hopkins spoon swirled in a little rye would get the fish outa their feeding stuper and bring 'em out all night long for a little warm belly fun..

.. probably cause 'em to try and spawn early too! :D

Re: jigging spoons through the ice

I start way up the line/leader by tying on two teardop jigs or flies or combo thereof with a large ****le (#6 or 7) to get everything down quick like. The flies/jigs get two or three maggots and the **** gets a perch eye. When they are very aggresive they prefer the **** and when they are a little more finicky they bite the flies. I fish this for perch and 'gills but have had lake trout and salmon hit the **** and the flies and have caught everything from walleye, smallmouth and pickerel on the ****le. When a school of perch are in 20 to 30 feet you want your bait to get down quick to them before they move. I tie the flies on a palomar with a very long free end and work my way down from there. You can tie a couple of combinations before hand with a swivel at each end and swap out until the fish hit. Have fun. Hey those little star things that showed up in my post are pretty funny considering the discussion. LOL

There is just something inherently wrong with the need to cut a hole in the spot where you’re going fishing. :p :D

silly rabbit. Ice fishing is for people. I took this picture at an ice fishing tournament. 17000 people were on the ice. 40 bucks a ticket to fish.
Ice fishing has started here.
Seen two guys with an atv out on the ice today.
But warm temps this weekend could put it all on hold for a week.

Hey eurolarva, I have heard about that tourny, but always after it is over.

What is the name, and when / where is it held?

Don't they give away some huge monster prizes, like trucks, or a house?

Re: jigging spoons through the ice

I am planning on going to this contest again this year Roscoe. I am trying to talk Barlow into going. It would be nice to meet some Iboaters up there. If anyone is planning on going we should try and hook up. I will post a thread before the tourny.

Re: jigging spoons through the ice

I'm not much for the cold fishing, but will keep it in mind.
I guess I could handle the cold for 3 hours. :)
Will talk to a few guys from work.

So what are you fishing for out there?
walleye, panfish, northern? anything?

Kind of trying to figure out what you would be using for tackle.
nevermind, found last years prize page.
Northern, walleye, whitefish, tulibee, whats a tulibee ??
WOW, a 4.46# walleye won the truck.
And a .59# rock bass won $10,000.
And 7 oz perch won an atv.

It must have been some God awful cold weather or something, as I see the winning fish were much larger in previouse years.

Even a guy like me could win this tourny. LOL

Do they assign you a hole, or do you pick it out yourself?

Re: jigging spoons through the ice

last year started about mid 20s with no wind. That walleye was caught in the first three minutes of the contest. Towards the end of the contest winds started to gust to 30 mph. Our fish finders were seeing a lot of fish however my guess is with the noise on the ice the bite was minimal. I am amazed at how fish could swim there without gettting tangled in all the fishing lines. The prior year only about 200 fish were caught so a small perch could win a prize. I was fishing for panfish and never even got a bite. It was fun just hanging out at the weigh station and watching people. If you get your ticket before the end of the year you can save five bucks. I will post an update when the tournament gets closer.

Re: jigging spoons through the ice

We have a Northern Challenge here in NY. $30 in, pike only. Largest three fish each hour wins 500, 200,100 every hour from 7am-3pm. At the end your ticket is good in a raffle where two Arctic Cat 400 ATV's and a bunch of power augers and all kinda stuff is given away. Only 1200 allowed but it's a fairly small lake and the ice is just covered with fellas. Cook some venison, drink a couple beers and enjoy the day. Any fish is a bonus and a twolb pike could win 500 some hours. It's a kick in the pants. You should go Roscoe.

Re: jigging spoons through the ice

Thinking about it, but time and cash restrictions may prevent.
300+ miles and $200+ for 3 hours of fishing.
I dunno if I can justify that.
It only costs me $300 for a week long vacation in Canada.

If I go, it will be with a guy from work. He has a daughter just north of Stillwater, so we would spend the night at her home to save from having to drive straight thru, and avoid trying to find a hotel at the last minute.

Both of us want to go, but will have to wait till after the new year to see if we will have to work.

I like a Kastmaster. Blue and chrome in most conditions,a dn gold in murky water. I would probably go with red/orange or orange/chart through the ice.
