So with the competition being so stiff between my big brother, and our cousin, sort of a "keepin up with the jones' kind of thing. We were at our favorite camp site at the lake, when our cousin "einstein" decides to take a spin on my brothers jet ski. We hear him yellin "Man this thing ain't s---! as the jet ski was at about a 45 degree angle nose up, and rooster tailing about 20 feet of water...about that time my brother yelled "pull up the anchor you idiot".....Classic idiocy

Isn't that redundant? Isn't idiocy just a synonym for jet ski?;) In all fairness, I can't begin to tell how many times I drug major weeds with the anchor on my pontoon.

I seriously hope you don't have the mindset that would say "you have a jet ski - therefore you're an idiot"

If so do you also say;

You're Hispanic - you must be illegal

You're Black - you must be a thug

You're Asian - you must be a lousy driver

I could go on and on

While I agree that some jet ski riders are less than responsible - don't lump all riders into that category least you be put in a category yourself!

I didn't put words in anyone's mouth. Look at the post.

I'm just so tired of people condemning jet ski riders because of a few Morons. The vast majority are responsible riders! There are idiots in every genre of boating. I think the root cause is a basic lack of respect for other people. Whatever happened to common courtesy? I am sorry if I come off poorly, I don't mean to. It's just that I believe that a lack of respect grows and festers within society partly because decent people put up with it rather than 'make a scene'. I think Americans need to speak up and try to turn this country around.

Trying to turn behavior stereotypes into racial stereotypes.....Yeah, THAT came off badly. Even comparing one to the other is so far beyond the realm of good taste. Here's an idea...Set up a poll to see how the users of this forum view jet flea riders. I'm guessing you have a jet ski. DBADA:rolleyes:

Again, I am sorry for coming off badly. Was having a bad day. But I still think what I was attempting to say (albeit poorly) is correct. Even on these boards it seems every time a jet ski is mentioned, it's done so in a negative way and I don't agree. No need for a poll, it is clear how jet ski's are viewed on this forum. Yes, there are idiot jet skiers, I don't deny that. But there are idiot boaters as well.

Yes, I did own a jet ski (not anymore). I also have a pontoon and a speedboat. It seems to me that if you've never ridden a jet ski, or have never owned one, you can't understand how much fun they can be (when ridden responsibly). But I was raised on the water with a deep respect for fellow boaters. It seems that if I do something stupid in my speedboat, and show remorse, it is instantly forgiven by other boaters. Kind of like "he had a temporary lapse, haven't we all at one point, you're excused". If I did the same exact infraction on a jet ski, with the same attempt to say I'm sorry, I am condemned. Just a double standard I don't agree with.

Also, I'm not trying to turn a behavioral stereotype into a racial one. I am just saying that ALL forms of stereotyping are destructive. I am not trying to personally attack anyone. I am trying to attack a stereotype. I love a good healthy debate. Even when I am proven wrong. Don't attack the person, attack the idea.

Around here almost all jet skiers are idiots and none of them respect us boaters by the boat ramp, runnin around doing those damn circles all over washing water into the boats as thay are going in at the ramp.I agree that just a few acting like idiots can give em all a bad name, but it was so bad here a couple years ago that the water patrol was sitting at the ramp on weekends, just to watch the jetskiers.Whats gonna happen is, 1 of the dumb***** jetskiers is gonna get killed for not paying attention and acting stupid, then whoever hits em is going to be at fault.I have almost hit em a time or 2 cause they think cause they are on a jet ski that goes 70 or so they can just run right out in front of you and beat you.

Re: jet ski idiocy

OK, since I was the one who made the comment in the first place, perhaps i should be the one ro say what I meant. Yes, there are some intelegent, well behaved jet skiers. There are also some real idiots. It is unfortunate that the decent ones get dropped in the same basket with the idiots. What can you do to change that?

1. If you let someone else ride your jet ski, make sure that they obey the rules... ALL OF THEM. That means that when the rules say you must be off the water by 1/2 hour before sunset, do so. Even when they are just visiting for the weekend. I used to live on a small lake and I simply could not fish on the weekends until well after sunset due to the jet fleas who would not leave me alone. Stay well clear of other boaters, including those at anchor and those who are running. Stay clear of my dock and shoreline. Especially stay clear of my child (or any person) when they are in the water.

2. My personal irritant is the sound level. Can't someone get a decent muffler on them? That would go a long way to reducing my personal complaint. And yes I know that they bare not the only noise makers out there. They are just the only ones that can run full throttle in the shallows right of my dock. Again, this is just my personal complaint.

On the plus side, there are some good uses for them. Our local boat cops make great use of them on the river.

Suggestions...

Police your own. Don't associate with idiots. Don't buy from dealers that are primarily selling to the idiots.

Push for proper law enforcement on all screw-up boaters.

Sorry for the level of acrimony,
TerryMSU

Re: jet ski idiocy

OK, this will be my last post re: this issue. After that let's just respectfully agree to disagree. I don't think we do disagree, we just have different perspectives. I hate the morons to.

I think the answer might be greater law enforcement presence, a more active law enforcement (as in actually write up tickets rather than warnings) and higher fines.

I understand the noise issue, but as stated earlier there are certainly other culprits on that issue. Through hull exhausts on go-fasts as one example.

As for riding right off the dock. There is absolutely NO excuse for that. My nieces swim right off our dock and if any moron came to close (there is a 200' law in Indiana) I would attempt to get a picture and try to turn them in.

The main point is we're all on the water for more or less the same reason. Why can't we all just respect each other and enjoy the benefits that boating can provide. It is truly a shame that a few morons can cause such an uproar.
