Re: Jet powered vs. inboard

I believe all of the welded aluminum boats that we mentioned here have a lifetime warranty on thier hulls for (cracking/weld poping)workmanship and materials.

Capn Mike---people pay you to scare them, or is there some other point I am missing?

It might be interesting for you to let Brother Chris in on how much $$ he will spend for liability insurance to cover someone falling out of the boat, not to mention the additional $$ to cover physical damage to the boat when he crashes.

You are right---I suspect he will have one chance to be reimbursed before the insurance carrier drops him.

Re: Jet powered vs. inboard

this thread just will not die. inboard jet handles better than a prop twin, is simpler than an inboard, requires allmost no maintainence compared to all other drives and gets allmost as good fuel effeciency as any non duoprop type drive.the bad old days of putting only big blocks in front of jet pumps is where the myth of gas guzzeling comes from. those that have small blocks and v6 are getting 5-7gph,bbs 7-9 gph. they are easier on engines than any prop system because there are no shock loads from shifting or prop strikes.they are less sensitve to weight and will plane heavier loads than a prop...you can get100%thrust and rpms tied to the dock without bothering the engine at all or changing props. simpler cooling system as the jet pump is also the cooling pump. i can tear mine down, replace and or repair any parts, and put it back together with three wrenches, a screwdriver and a hammer befor lunch. as for the difference between .160 and .190.....is the .030 that i still had between floating and sinking after i ran over a rock last summer.not watching the water.stupidity.and twenty miles from the nearest help. jet pump technology has really advanced..at least for inboards...outboard jets are another story, and there are many players in the game. they are powerimg boats from 6 feet to 100+ feet. made by companies from yamaha to rolls royce. made for jet skis to ocean going luxery yachts.

Brother Chris is on the right track checking all this out before he buys. I just think annual operating costs should be part of the equation before any boat is purchased.

My conventional I/O costs me about $1,320 per 100 hours of operation for fuel (ave.$2/gal.), boat and trailer license, insurance and maintenance (that's actual maintenance cost on my last I/O amortized over 10 years at the going labor rate in our area).

I suspect you pay $1,200 or more just for fuel to run a jet boat 100 hours.

Re: Jet powered vs. inboard

Well, thanks for all the replies. I do appreciate them.
I realize that running a jet powered boat is going to be more costly than I expected, along with less hp.
I might just go with an outboard now. I am not sure. I think I will rent one with jet power, and then aluminum with a ob and see which is better.
What a decision to make!
Does a ob with jet propulsion have less hp than a reg ob with a prop? Anyone know about this?
Thanks, bro Chris...

About 15% ie:150 prop is a 135 jet, they use the same powerhead. Just a suggestion you may want to check out the Fraser Valley Sportsman show in Abbotsford at the tradex this weekend. You should get some good ideas as well as prices on the types of the type of boat your looking for.

Re: Jet powered vs. inboard

We are new to the US market, we make a new stern drive unit that can trim up and down for running in shallows etc.
The drive looks like a surface drive but uses standard Bravo II props and can run on gas 500Hp or diesel 340HP.
Anyway have a look at our site, as we have people looking to replace jets because of the junk that gets sucked up in the shallows, our system is a great option.
www.dbdmarine.com

Re: Jet powered vs. inboard

In all the boats I've owned (see list below), I've only had one jet boat, and would never own one again!

After saying that, please keep in mind I mostly (OK always) run in deep water (i.e. river, lake or ocean), and maybe my 22' sled was underpowered (high output 307HP small block chev).

If you do go with a jet, I'd STRONGLY recommend nothing but a high output BIG BLOCK (GM 454, 496, 502) and a Hamilton Jet drive, and you'll never wish you had more power (as I always did)!

My only other piece of feedback is this class of aluminum jet sled rides very ROUGH (they have suspension ride seats for a reason), even with the slighest of ripple/waves, due to the flat bottom.

Re: Jet powered vs. inboard

Well, this weekend I am going to the sportsman show. I will try to find out more about these jet powered boats.
One thing I don't like about them is the loss of hp.
I'll keep you guys posted.
Who knows maybe I'll come back this weekend with new one
