Here comes a dumb question but I must explain first... so bear with me.

My buddy comes up to me tonight & say he has this Merc XR4 150 on his bass boat on river... it seems his kids were up ther last week & took it out & put oil in resevoir... notice it was leaking out... wants me to go up with him & take a look... this is an hour away plus a good 30 minutes from civilization once I get there, so I need to be prepared. Sounds like a line or fitting leaking & causing this to run out of the cover.

So JB, 12footer, Walt & all the other OB guys... what should I expect before I get there plus what supplies/parts do you think I may or may not need. Your input is requested on this one plus I will keep you posted on what transpires... This guy is a big buddy of mine... boating & golf plus I fix just about everything at his lake house for him.

Waiting on your replies/opinions... Thanks in advance.

Hey fone I am no expert either, this may sound crazy, but I think I remember reading on a board somewhere about fuel getting into the tank and overflowing it. good luck

I'm no Merc guy but, I've had several of the plastic "tie rap" or "ratchet strap" clamps snap for no reason on both fuel lines and VRO lines. I think the metal hose clamps are the best.

John
http://www.hunt-fish.com

First ask your bud if it is leaking from the engine res. or the on board boat res.If it is leaking from the engine might and hopefully is as simple as a loose cap .When kids get involved any thing can happen.

Thanks guys.......

He said it was leaking from around the engine cover... for all that is worth... dripping down the engine into the water.

So I will carry an assortment of stainless steel hose clamps & hope this will be a simple repair!!!

I will let you know.

Should be just a loose cap on motor resevoir.
Mine backs off about once a year just a little and allows oil to leak when motor is tilted up, especially when towing home. I think it loosens just from motor vibration. Hope that's what it is.

If you fill the reservior to the gills, it will leak out of the air hole in cap when tilted up, or the cap's loose like denton said.

I also never laid hands on one of those engines (sure would like to though).
I haven't much to add to what has already been sugested, except to bring some mariine tex ,engine degreaser, and lotsa rags to sop-up the goo. And go jo.

Foneman, if it is leaking out of the engine cowling, most likely a resivoir cap that is leaking....these resivoirs under pressure when motor is running, an over tightened and cracked cap will puke oil all over the motor...check the gasket inside the cap too, they split an leak.....almost anything else you can patch with tywraps an hose....

Oil is under pressure in tank, I think they just cross threaded cap back on or perhaps cracked it. You may look like a genius on this one. Or maybe no return call because has found cap was just loose?

Hope it all turns out for the best.
Having fits of my own trying to figure out this new (to me) 225 EFI, Lots o boxes and sensors and pumps...O MY! ANd there is a warning label on oil tank informing that it WILL leak if not airtight.
