there is a rule of thumb, if mounting on transom, the a/v plate should be 1- 1 1/2 inches above the bottom of the hull. adding a jack plate, for every 12 inches of set back, you raise the engine 1/2 inch. this is a rule of thumb, as every boat is diffferent, so it may take some fine funing. getting the right set up is crutial to the preformance of the boat.
