Im generally very mechanically inclined, however, the carb is still a bit of an issue to me. I have just puchased a boat with mentioned motor and boy did i get ripped off... first boat and it fired and ran and went into gears but it was tore up something fierce. First off, all the linkage was out of wack causing it to race. once i figured that out i got it idling right and took it out and nothing! Basically running on 2 cyl. Then found out i had a carb that had a bad gasket and fuel was just bypassing the needle assembly and pouring into the cylinder. I managed to fix that and today i took it out and now have power to get up and plain but it seemed slow. so i messed with it a little and found that if i bump the electric choke its like turning on the afterburner! instant power burst. can maintain it by constantly bumping it too. however i know this 'power burst' is my true WOT. is this merely and adjustment issue? or do i have more problems here?

1983 70hp Johnson..... Clogged, fouled carburetors.

Remove, clean, rebuild all three carburetors.

And i was hoping that i could just turn a screw somewhere. I guess this is as good a time as any to teach myself about carbs. If i have to do much more to this thing, I'll practiacally be a certified technician. Other than the secret file, is there anywhere else to look for tips/tricks specifically for this carb?

Those carburetors are fairly simple, rocket science mentality not required.

There's no valve adjustments to make. Just make notes, take some pictures in steps before dismantling. Make a note of what size jets go where (they're marked with their sizes).

When assembling, make sure that the linkage between carburetors is adjusted so that all butterflies open and close at the same time.... and that at idle all of them are absolutely closed.

Manually & carfully clean the brass high speed jet that's located in the bottom center portion of the float chamber with a piece of single strand steel wire as solvent just doesn't do the job properly.

With the carburetor body held upside down, the float being viewed from the side, adjust the float so that the free end of the float (the end opposite the hinge pin) is ever so slightly higher (just ever so slightly off level) than the other end. And when viewed from the end, make sure it is not cocked.

Scribe mark on cam should be aligned with center of carburetor throttle roller when throttle butterflies just start to open, not before or after.

Re: J70ELCTE help please :)

Awesome info. I dont have a tool and no means to make one, but I did a quick disassemble and clean and did the wire with jets still in place. Two high speeds for sure needed it bad. Put it back together and it already idles better. I need to go back and readjust all my idle settings. I'm sure once I get a tool they will be running like champs. It was much easier than I feared. Glad there is no valves to tinker with. Thanks for all your help. and the notes for the roller and scribe mark were much needed. theres two there and i couldnt figure out if it went inbetween or on the one marked idle. Sadly i will not be back on the water untill thursday to verify any results. But it definately already feels better.

Fells better is not going to cut it. You have to get the kits and do it right. You can't half azz a carb rebuild believe me I know. Also get the tool made, you can make it with a file and small screw driver.

Two scribe marks? Use first scribe mark centering with roller.

to patrick: i do plan on getting it done 'right'. but im impatient and just had to do some tinkering today. i know a few people with the tool just not on such short notice.
to joe: yes, there appears to be 2 marks on the throttling arm (name i just made up for it). but one is clearly marked idle and its the upper. and thats what ive been using. (its also the one at the apex of the curve on it)
