I know we all call our engines "motors", but I was thinking of a shop teacher I had way back when. He stated that a motor was powered by electric and the what resides in our vehicles are engines. So, he said motorcycles are really enginecycles!
Of course this was way before we had all these electric vehicles.
He also said a flashlight was a search lamp since it didn't flash.
Anyone have any more misused words to share?

Please don't let anyone come up with driveway and parkway. And I agree with the shop teacher, my boat has an outboard engine.

Do you trust Merriam-Webster?
Definition of motor

2 : any of various power units that develop energy or impart motion: such as
a : a small compact engine
b : internal combustion engine; especially : a gasoline engine
c : a rotating machine that transforms electrical energy into mechanical energy

3 : motor vehicle; especially : automobile

How about Oxford?

That's interesting! Thanks for that.
Wow, I guess my shop teacher was just some kind of fanatical nut-job? I'm devastated! All my adult life I thought...engine...not motor!!!!

A locomotive is called an engine and steam or diesel are IC, while electric powered trains are called engines not motors. How can we be confused?

Does one use a rule or a ruler to measure something?

I won't go into the English and American terms for the same things.
