Well there ya go. If they cheat on the timing of a traffic light, what other stupid mistakes do they make "for the public"? Thanks Rickfifty. Now I know a yellow should give me at least 4.3 seconds to live or die, depending on what town I'm in.

Thanks Rickfifty, that link says it all.<br /><br />No one here is suggesting a true red light runner should not be severely penalized and punished. On that we all agree.<br /><br />But to penalize the other 98% of us law abiding citizens with dangerous traffic signal trickery just to improve city revenues should be a crime too and city officials who play that game ought to be run out of office without a pension.

In his book ‘Constitutional Chaos – What Happens When The Gov’t Breaks Its Own Laws’ by Judge Andrew Napolitano, he says those traffic cameras are unconstitutional in America because every defendant has the right to face (and question) their accuser. In the case of those traffic cameras, your accuser can’t be questioned, i.e. no one saw you commit the alleged crime.<br /><br />The book is a good read, tho it may raise your blood pressure. There is a chapter on eminent domain, its history, and details of how the courts have vacated their obligation to protect the property of citizens. I mention this beacuse of the previous e.d. thread.

I agree with this 100%<br /><br />IMHO there is a certain amount of judgement required by a cop to determine whether running a yellow that turns red is a ticketable offense. The camera wont show that had the car stopped they may have been rear ended. Thats just as much of an issue to me as getting t-boned. Last year my mom slammed on her brakes on a yellow that i wouldve gone through and we were rear ended at 30mph by a drunk driver. Now alchohol had an effect for sure, but being there I'd say we wouldve been hit regardless of whether he was drunk. <br /><br />BTW I also feel that for the first few seconds after a light turns red, the people who just got a green have a responsibility to look both ways before crossing for the sole purpose of making sure no one couldnt stop....AFTER that fine fine fine fine fine to the max.

sayin traffic cameras are unconstitutional because you can't face your accuser is like OJ gettin off on a technocality, they are nice enough to send you a picture from all angles of you breaking the law.

There's a law in Oregon that says a town can't have red light cameras if the population is under 40,000 or something like that...I don't remember the exact number. The town next door has about 20,000, and they got special permission to put in cameras. If the law doesn't make 'em money, that's ok, they don't have to follow it. Red light runners and traffic in general are NOT a problem in this town, I drive through it almost every day and can't recall seeing a single accident or red light runner...

After seeing a red light runner behind me get killed, you'll never convince me it is NOT a problem.

Red light runners would only be a problem worthy of cameras in an area where it is a very common occurance...like a busy city intersection. On a very low traffic country highway, there is NO need for cameras of any sort...except to make money. It's not going to lower the amount of people running red lights if there's already almost nobody doing it.

It seems some of us think revenue inhancement might be involved. Simple cure, go up on taxes. I wonder why no body ever thought of that. ;) ;) ;) ;)

Red means stop.<br />Green means go.<br />Yellow means go very fast.<br /><br />Redlight running just keeps getting worse. Happens too frequently that I brake, gently, with plenty of time to stop, on yellow, the guy behind me floors it & zooms around to run the red light.

Reminds me of when I was taking driver's education. Red means "STOP", Yellow means "Stop unless you are at or beyond the point of no return." and Green means "Proceed IF it is safe to do so."<br /><br />The point of no return was once explained to me by a police officer. In his opinion, if the (properly timed) light turns red before you clear the other side of the intersection, then you could have stopped.<br /><br />And ZmOz, (humorously intended) you are very astute, and have an uncanny ability to state the obvious. But seriously I am sure you are writing from experience. Here in my corner of the world we have RED light runners at nearly every light, regardless of their location. I have sat behind Sheriff's cars at a light when it turned green, and a car on the cross street ran the light. And the Sheriff's Deputy turned the other way and let the red light runner go on their way to kill another day. I wish we had cameras around my town. I would gladly embrace the enforcement. I would not need to fear being caught myself. Now the photo radar vans, then I might have a problem. :D
