Lake Columbia is the cooling pond for the Portage power plant. It is just outside of Portage, WI. It stays around 70 degrees all year round. The DNR has stocked it with smallmouth, largemouth, and hybrid striped bass. It is has a retaining wall that runs down the middle of it. The entire north end (which on one side of the wall is the hottest, the other side of the wall is the coldest) is a fish refugee--no fishing allowed. This time of year, the bass move out of the refugee because other areas have more tolerable temperatures. It is a fun break from ice fishing to head up there and catch some bass. There is also a ton of channel cats in there which can be a blast with a bobber and minnow set up. Only place in Wisconsin where you can catch a hybrid, so I highly recommend it!

Duderino- well, you call that a brain-fart .. I assumed you were elsewhere than here in WI.<br /><br />never been there up there myself but, have talked about it in the past with other guys. <br /><br />Have you fished it?

Yes. I fished it a couple of times last year. I went one day, just fishing it with minnows and a bobber, and had non-stop action. Caught several nice largemouth, a nice striper, and a ton of catfish. Went back the next day fishing the same spots with the same set-up, and came away with 1 or 2 small cats! Never really worked it with spinners, but lots of guys do. If you do ever go, concentrate on working the shoreline. It is all rip-rap, and it drops off quite quickly. I think nearly every fish I caught there was within 10 yards of the shore.

By the way, if I remember correctly, you live within 15 miles of me. Where is this tackle shop where you picked up your equipment?

Barlow,<br /><br />I live just north of Cambridge. You are in Marshall, correct? I am always open to fishing, it's just that the war department doesn't always agree. If you are in Marshall, we should definately get together. I suck at ice fishing, but I am learning!
