The engine is a 1975 85 evinrude it looks like it needs a new power pack as 1 cylinder has intermitent spark, and coils as two are starting to develop hairline cracks. The compresion is 130 in all holes and it has T&T. my question is given the cost of a replacement with a newer (late 1990's) motor is something like this worth putting the money in? Would alate 90's motor generally be alot better? What are the chances of the lower cranckshaft seals going bad on a model like this as that looks like it would be above my level to repair? I looked on the Kelly Blue Book and the retail value of this motor is $65 in good condition? I don't have a lot of experience with outboards but I have a vast experience with other money pits. If you have any first hand opinions please help.

Compression is good! I'd replace the coils and see how it runs. A lot cheaper than buying a newer motor.

I'd buy the T&T off you in a heartbeat.

2 new coils and a tune up kit are probably less than $85.

change the coil, that is intermitent. should solve the problem. if the coils are cracking, they will fail eventually. sounds like you have a good base to work with.

I would attempt to get her running if it's not too much $$$. Have you seen the price of new motors  ?

I am currently trying to diagnose trouble with my '83 Johnson 115.

I'd prefer to be cruising though

Sounds like you need to buy a manual and start learning! This forum can help you when you get stuck. With good compression, you're money ahead!

Blue book means nothing. Try and find that exact motor for sale anywhere for $65. You won't. W/ T&T and running strong w/ good compression it's easily a $700 motor and I've seen them go for $1200.

I have a 1972 Johnson 65hp motor that I bought for $400 and put about $1,600 into. I don't regret a dime of it. I had a few kinks with it last year, but it has been generally solid as a rock.

To me, the decision to refurbish a motor of this vintage is alot more simple than that of a newer motor, simply because the older motors are very uncomplicated. What it all boils down to is basic mechanical condition and availability of parts.

If your motor is generally sound mechanically, I would hesitate to refurbish it.
