Re: Is this trolling motor setup safe?

As I mentioned earlier, strength and resistance to the torsional forces caused by a very long lever (the troller motor shaft) on the mount suggests using the longest mount possible. Four bolts spaced close together does not provide the sturdiness that the same four bolts provide when spaced farther apart. Hence the longer mount. But don't run out and buy the longer mount until you are certain the one you have simply can't be used. Remember, you need to have the bolts spaced as far apart as possible. As for repair of the glasswork, that's up to you. Chances are you won't be using the existing holes so if any repair is done, have those plugged as well. However, since the plate will sit above the boat by a couple inches these will be visible so why not wait until you have the mount totally figured out. Then remove it, have any repair work done and then reiinstall the mount.

Have you tried removing the backrest for the bow seat to see if there is an opening behind it. Seems to me there should be access to that area. All you need is a space large enough to get your hand into so you can add underdeck support and mounting hardware.

I'm interested in knowing how this turned out for you as I need to do something similar on my boat where I can't thru bolt the TM mount.

I ended up having a custom bracket made and through bolting by cutting an access hole behind the seat cushion. It's a good setup, I'll post pics soon.

Sorry for the late response. Here are a couple pictures of it I pulled from my camera and facebook. Hopefully I'll take some much better ones soon. I've used this bracket a number of times now, and it's solid.

If you have a chance, could you post a couple more pictures of the final project please. Any additional info you can provide about the materials used would be greatly appreciated by those of us trying (unsuccessfully) to do what you have done.

Thanks!

When fixing these plates down to fibre glass its always a good idea once you are ready for the final fitting to use silicone on the mating surfaces ..it does not always stick as in glue but it spreads the load when everyting tries to flex ...

OK...I got some pictures.

An access port was cut behind the seat cushion and a metal plate was installed underneath. You can probably figure out the rest of the information from the pictures. And yes....silicone was used on all mating surfaces.

Picture album here.
