I am about to put my transom back in my 77' mfg gypsy .....I was at a store and found a product similar to dura glass ....u-pol fiberal lite it is a poly based putty with short strand fibers in it .......does this sound pretty much like what you guys are using ???? Any input is welcomed since I have no clue !!

Looks to be basically the same stuff. Kinda pricey! You can make your own for about 1/3rd less.

Thanks wood .....I want to go this route mainly because I don't have a garage..actually put the transom in a few hours ago ...I dumped the while gallon on the transom stirred the hardner in and spread it out about a quarter inch thick, threw it in the boat and clamped it with five of your 2+4 clamps and some c-clamps ...I worked as fast as I could I hope it works,,, the outside of the boat was pretty warm so I know the resin kickEd

You put the hardener in AFTER or Before you dumped it? How long was it before you got her clamped down? Did you have the transom wood coated with Resin and CSM? Did you Acetone wash everything before clamping?

Aye .. it sounded like he had his trans on some saw horses.. dumped the gal of filler on the part..squirted his tube of hardener..mixed it up..spread it around..then installed it.

As far as your other questions .. He didnt really say ;) ..

Personally I would Not have used a bondo-glass type cream hardened filler to install a transom. Just not enough working time and normally that stuff is Too thick.

But no going back now :) .. not like your gonna rip that trans out now.

Good luck and put plenty of glass on the inside...

That's how I did it...dumped put the hardner in stirred spread and clamped ...wood I did seal the transom wood some what but I only used resin painted on ...i then lightly sanded and put the mud on that side ...I also did clean every thing with acetone ..I will try to post some pics tomorrow I don't have a computer and can't seem to load pics straight from my phone ...one question I have though is how long to leave it clamped ...over night our should I wait until I get thewhile thing tabbed in

Wow, I hope you got it all mixed well. Very important that the hardener get's mixed well. You also never use resin without glass. It will crack and allow water penetration. 24 hrs of clamp time should be sufficient if the mix hardens properly. Like YD says, Make sure to Tab well. I'd recommend a minimum of this, 4" CSM, 6" of 1708, 8" of CSM and 10" of 1708. I'd follow up with a full layer of 1708 and extend a full 12" onto the sides and bottom of the Hull. Finish up with a layer of CSM. That will ensure it's strong enough. Use a free photobucket account to post your phone pics.

Is this the stuff you used ? http://www.u-pol.com/documents/datasheets/tds/FIBL-TDS-EN.pdf

Doing repairs is one thing .. I dont think this was intended to be used as a Structural application..

There are different materials for every job. I dont think you used the Right materials for the Job .. IMO ..

He would have been better off using Cabosil/Resin and MEKP.

From the PDF file ..

"Pot Life U-POL FIBRAL LITE is rapid curing and non shrinking once mixed, 4-5 mins. at 20?C with 3% hardener.
Drying Time
Sandable after 20 mins. at 20?C. IMPORTANT – This fillers is very easy to sand and therefore
recommend that nothing coarser (or lower) than P80 paper is used.
"

WAY too fast cure to install a transom correctly.

IMG_20121119_123455.jpg ...I hope this comes through..yacht Dr...that is the stuff I used it seemed to work pretty good as fat as I can tell, the transom seems hard as a rock I used this to make my fillets also .....so far I have two layers of tabbing...2" &4" ....going with one more ...I only have a 25HP Motor I think that should be enough ....I appreciate every ones input since I really have no idea what I'm doing,,, but my repairs have to better than the wet mush that I took out

Im just saying that fast filler is not the optimal beading filler you would normally use for a transom install.

Can it be used .. I guess.. should it be used .. probably not. Its just too darn fast kickin.

Resin and glass is what your going to be using in the next stage .. so buy a gallon extra for your fills and leave the bondo for your gelcoat repairs ..

Have a good weekend :)

Thanks yacht Dr I'm learning alot from reading different threads on this site..now that I put the transom in the way I did there's no going back ..what are some of your concerns do you think the funeral lite will crack or start to separate ?? And it's there anything I may be able to do to prevent this ..this being my rebuild I'm sure I will have several more questions should I start a new thread of my progress and new questions or keep this thread going IMG_20121023_174629.jpg

Na .. keep the thread going :)

As far as your trans install .. nothing to do about it ..

Just keep an eye on it. I dont know if that fairing filler will fail or not.

yd i agree its to fast for a transom install. i thought it would be fine for filling gaps to tab. like the uses for pb. im not doubting you for a second. could you explain the reason is it the cream hardener or the material is just for filling. just wondering my self . i was going to use that and some vette adheasive. for that purpose only to use it up. if it wont work i wont but would like a little tech on it...jim

I cant explain it .. but all of the cream hardened fillers out of a can is quick cure.

Some of the canned filler is actually good stuff for some of the moderate repairs that are not structural.

But in the case of rebuilding a trans/stringers/bulkies/decks .. its not really the optimal solution for a filler or bonding agent.

Your going to be using resin and glass of some kind. So why are you spending hard earned cash on some over priced filler in a can. Just make it yourself.

Making your own makes it easier to make the filler the exact consistency for whatever your using it for: from super thick for vertical surfaces, 'hairy' for structural fillets, transom bonding & other high strength needs to very thin fairing compound just before gelcoat/paint.

And you can add fillers to a little left over resin after a glassing session & use it up instead of making resin pucks:

1 or 2 is plenty. Nobody wants (needs) 35 of them.....

So I tried to cut my stringers yesterday which did not go to well ...the old stringers were so rotted out they could not be used for a pattern ...so my question is now what???? I'm having trouble cutting the twards the bow .....could I stop the stringers before this point and box them off or will I lose to much support...smoother thing is the stringers need to be 10 ft if I Co the whole length so I'm trying to use a 12ft 1+4 .....any ideas or thoughts....I will try to get some pics in a few days
