finished tearing the foot apart.

top shaft bearing had some surface rust so I'm like "aha!"

but it looks good internally and all the needle bearings spin free as can be without any type of grinding/gripping action as I roll them around with my fingers.

this part is where the water pump impeller sits right? so it should be stuck in place to the shaft like this?

also took out the pinion and forward gear and looked at the bearings/gear teeth/and bearing races a bit better. all looks good to me.

here's the top of the mainshaft where the blue'ing is occuring. couldnt really get a good pic with my cell phone camera due to the lighting but the blue is nice and deep right past the teeth and continues blueish until you see it change color to the standard grey color of the shaft. how do I get access to this bearing to inspect it? do I have to remove the powerhead from the rest of the assembly? I'd read up on it but I've gotta get ready for going out tonight lol.

didnt have a chance to look in the manual but I tried shining a flashlight up in there and couldnt see anything. I'm just hoping this doesnt turn out badly.

You got the 3 jaw "metric" gearcase and they are a little noisy when ran on a hose. I myself see no problem with the amount of metal on magnet and see no/any damage to gear or bearings in pictures you posted. You stated it was hard to turn when you removed it ,was this with impeller and housing still in place as yes it would be stiff to turn if still installed. The bluing on end of shaft is normal for these models as the splines are machined into the S/S shaft and the machining process turns them a bluish purple. If you hear a whiring at slow speeds in gear but not in neutral and this is a aluminium boat, what your hearing is harmonics of the engine loading and unloading the prop and this was bad on the small "backtroller" style boats. I have also seen this harmonic "rattle" in the hulls of several aluminum boats and usually they all have a aluminum prop but have see it with a S/S but not as often.....

thanks for the info. I'll get the gearcase back together probably tomorrow (need to buy some seals I noticed are bad) and then crank up the engine and take some video to better convey the sound.

Did you ever pull the spark plugs and turn the flywheel by hand to check for binding of the main bearings? You probably don't have this issue, but is is a simple test. I would think the mains would get loose, vs bind...

I figured while putting the foot back together, I'd go ahead and renew all the seals since god only knows when the last time it was done.

I'm pretty sure this is the one I need but ouch its $$$ for a couple o-rings and gaskets...

http://www.iboats.com/mall/partfind...gd_poid=110523&gd_row=52&**********=495564405

anyway, I see two grooves on my bearing carrier but the outer one doesnt have an o-ring on it. why is there a groove there if no o-ring goes there? I can see why it wouldnt as its exposed to salt water in this portion but still has me curious.

you can see the o-ring on the left and just the groove on the right.
