My boat has not been to a mechanic since 2006. The only thing I contract out is having bottom paint done, that's one job I won't do.

In this pic you can see where they pried the drive off, that's probably what trashed the pivot housing (grey arrows) I'm sure it wasn't coming off any other way. I highlighted the areas in blue where the marine grease should be spread to keep the drive and pivot from seizing together.

Thank you for the link - I'm definitely planning to do yearly maintenance myself from now on. I just need to research and watch some how to videos and I'll be able to figure it all out. Better than spending $1400/year to have a shop do it.

The bad pivot housing smells a bit iffy. I'd ask the mechanic why. If the gasket surface was damaged during removal, I'd expect the same on the upper gear hsg. Some grinding, cleaning and JB weld...followed by sanding flush could give a good sealing surface. No structural issues with this repair. You can do this yourself. Huge parts savings plus a couple more hrs labor savings.

Yep. I've used @Scott Danforth 's method of placing a wood block between the drive and the gimbal ring, and using the trim up to break it loose.
