Came across this baby when I was out with my brother just cuttin' up the water. Got a little close. Ya think my wake upset them? :D

Do you call this a boat, yacht or ship?

Think the transom and stringers need replacing yet?

I'm looking to move up from my 21 footer to something bigger. Think that thing's got a stand up head? They can keep the whirlybird. And that radar arch must be always catching on the covered slip.

It was on the Peconic Bay, NY. Near Sag Harbor and Shelter Island. I often see the large ships go into this bay and anchor then unload the speed boats, jet skis (like 6 or 8 at a time), etc and cut loose! Nothing like having a crane on board to drop and retreive your toys when it's time to go.

I think the crew also like the calm water to practice some manuvering because I have seen them just rotating in place very slowly, put anchors down, pull up, put down, pull up, motor back back, motor forward, back again, and so on. Water is about shallow, about 12 - 20 feet deep outside of the channel. When they are done, they motor about 5 minutes back to the Sag Harbor Marina and tie up in a slip. Takes a good 20 minutes to park one of those. And they have fenders the size of mini vans. No kidding.

I always feel funny when I launch my 14 footer at the marina and have to motor past a dozen of those behemoths before getting into the bay. People think my boat is the dingy.

Here is the gauntlet I have to pass to get into the bay. Rather intimidating lineup. Most of their lifeboats are bigger than my boat. So I truly am the small fish in the pond.

One of these days when I see an open slip between two of these ships I'm going to back into it, and tie up! I got dibs on the slip!

Mark22,
I bet you enjoy your boat at least as much or more than they do.
And you probably get better gas milage too.
Although repairing to the aft deck for a soak in the hottub & a cocktail is a little more difficult. :)

No use to me.

It'd mean changing my trailer again.

And getting a four by four.

I was to understand this...

A boat will fit on a ship....

I feel your pain mark42 I was fishing up in on lake ontario and filling up with some gas when this "ship" comes in. The boat on the ship was the same size as mine 17foot.

Although my gas bill was slightly smaller then his.

Re: Is this a boat?

It must be a very interesting job working on one of those ships. But I wouldn't want to be the one who has to wash and wax it after a day out on the water. :D

Some of those boats fill up directly from a tanker truck. Now that is a load of diesel.

Many of the big ones are corporate owned and have registry in places like the Caymen Islands. Anyone know why? Does it have to do with taxes?

Re: Is this a boat?

Yes it has everything to do with taxes. Spent one summer in high school on a 120 rig as a deck hand, asst. steerman, towel boy, waiter and whatever. Nice really rich lady owned the boat and each summer traveled the gulf and Carribean with friends. Amazing how the wealthy live although she was very kind to me and no one treated the crew as anything but equals. Nice summer. Oh year that was 1964.

Mount a 12" gun on front and it would be a destroyer escort category.
